After a week in Beijing, time to go south, to Yunnan.

After a night in Kunming, we board an old overnight bus… Rustic comfort of course, but that’s good fun!

Waking up at 4am, we are thrown in an old salun motuoche (motor tricycle), heading off to the sunset at Yuanyang Xinjie, somewhere about 200km from the Vietnamese border.

Perched on the mountains, just above rolling fog and clouds, here they are: the fabulous Yuanyang rice terraces. Watching them at sunrise or sunset is an amazing experience, with such a different palette of colors. During winter, they are pools, reflecting morning mists, clouds and water buffalo chewing cud.
